New Year’s Eve in Bangkok 2027: Countdown, Fireworks and Parties

Thursday 31 December 2026 into Friday 1 January 2027. The big free countdowns, river fireworks, White Party week, rooftops, and how to actually get home after midnight.

New Year’s Eve in Bangkok is huge. Hundreds of thousands of people pack the shopping district around Ratchaprasong, the river lights up with fireworks, and the rooftops charge their highest prices of the year.

This year the night falls on a Thursday, and New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January) is a public holiday, so you get a long weekend straight after. Here is how to plan it without spending two hours stuck in traffic.

The big countdowns

The 2026 programs had not been published when we wrote this. These two venues have hosted Bangkok’s biggest public countdowns for years, so expect them again and confirm details in December.

CentralWorld, Ratchaprasong

Bangkok’s version of Times Square. Last year’s countdown was free and outdoors on the plaza, with a concert stage of Thai pop acts, a drone show and fireworks across the skyline. The organiser said more than 350,000 people came. Six roads around CentralWorld were closed to cars from the afternoon until the early hours, so walk in from BTS Chit Lom or Siam.

ICONSIAM, on the river

The “Amazing Thailand Countdown”, run with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, has been held at ICONSIAM’s River Park on the Chao Phraya, with a multi-day music program before the big night and fireworks over the water at midnight. The riverside fills hours before midnight, so come early. Get there by the BTS Gold Line (Charoen Nakhon station) or by boat.

Asiatique and the riverbank

A calmer option with river views. Many riverside hotels and restaurants also sell dinner packages facing the fireworks. Book them now, they go fast.

Free countdowns mean huge crowds. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket, agree on a meeting point with your group, and don’t count on mobile data right at midnight.

White Party Bangkok

One of Asia’s biggest LGBTQ+ party weeks, and a big part of Bangkok’s New Year. The 2026 to 2027 edition, its 10th anniversary, runs from Tuesday 29 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. The listed program has a pool day at The River Club, then night parties at Paragon Hall in Siam Paragon, including a New Year’s Eve party on the 31st, the Main Event on Saturday 2 January and a closing party on the 3rd. Each night has its own dress theme. Buy only through the official channels and check the schedule before you go.

Rooftops and hotel parties

Rooftop bars are the classic NYE move, and they know it. Most switch to ticketed packages for the night, with set menus or minimum spends, and the good ones sell out weeks ahead. If a rooftop is on your list, book in November.

Check the dress code before you go. Many rooftops refuse shorts, sleeveless tops and flip flops, NYE or not.

Practical tips

Transport

For the last countdown, the BTS ran until about 02:00 (last train from Siam at 02:45) and the MRT Blue and Purple lines until 02:00. The operators usually confirm their New Year hours in late December, so check before the night. Trains are the best way in and out of the countdown zones, as roads close and traffic freezes.

Grab and Bolt

Expect surge pricing and long waits around midnight and again when the clubs close. Walk a few blocks away from the crowds before you book, or wait 30 minutes for prices to drop.

Book ahead

Hotels, rooftops, river dinners and club tickets all go up in price as the date gets closer. The earlier the better.

Bring ID

The legal drinking age is 20 and clubs check. Bring your passport or an official photo ID, as some doors only accept the original passport. Our Thailand nightlife rules guide covers the rest.

Plan for a long weekend

1 January is a Friday and a holiday, so the party carries on through Friday and Saturday night. Pace yourself.

Bangkok nights: where to dance

If fireworks and pop stages are not your thing, Bangkok’s underground scene is in Silom, close to BTS Sala Daeng and Chong Nonsi. House, techno and late nights, without the mall crowds.
